House rules

How to prune politely

More about Snoei and robots.txt

  • Public only, entered by you

Snoei only reads pages that anyone can see without logging in, and only the address you enter. It skips login pages.

  • No email addresses or phone numbers

Snoei refuses to collect them. Links to mailto: and tel: are only counted, never shown or exported.

  • Copyright stays

Texts, tables and images belong to whoever made them. Use them to check or to quote with a source, not to copy.

  • One page at a time

No crawling of whole sites. Snoei reads what you give, at most checks the links or language versions of that one page, follows robots.txt and keeps the pace low.

How it works

SEO check for a page in three steps

  1. Paste the address

Of a public page, preferably your own.

  2. Read the points

Each point gets good, could be better or problem, with what Snoei saw and why it matters.

  3. Adjust and check again

Update the points on your site and prune the page again. The score rises with it.

Questions

Good to know

  • Does a high score promise a better spot in Google?

No. The score says how tidy the basics of your page are. Your ranking depends mostly on the content and on other sites linking to you.

  • Why count characters and not pixels?

Search engines cut titles off by width in pixels, which differs per letter. About 60 characters for a title and 160 for a description is a good rule of thumb.

  • Does Snoei check speed too?

No. Snoei reads the page’s HTML without loading scripts or images. Speed is better measured in your own browser.
